Hello, I’m Lisa D. Jenkins, and I’m the Senior Pastor of the St. Matthew’s Baptist Church of Harlem located in New York City. My mission is to help empower people for purpose-filled living. Although my overall calling is to help men and women fulfill their calling and realize their potential, I have a special place in my heart for women who are actively involved in ministry.
To that end, I provide information on personal development, productivity, and leadership as well as Bible commentary in the form of devotions, studies, videos and live streams. You can find me broadcasting on Periscope regularly.
My goal is to post two to three times a week. To make sure that you don’t miss my latest posts, you can subscribe via email. It’s quick and easy, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
God has placed me in situations that have enabled me to not only overcome obstacles but to utilize my experiences so that others can be empowered. Prior to entering the ministry, I was expelled from my church because I was pregnant and unwed. Soon after the birth of my son, I began to seek a closer relationship with God and an understanding of His word. After enrolling in seminary, I rose through the ranks of ministry while raising my son and caring for my mother and father, both of whom suffered strokes in 2001 and 2006, respectively.
Prior seminary and ministry, I worked in the private sector as an Executive Administrator and as a Human Resources Administrator for several Fortune 500 companies. I also worked as a gospel announcer for Radio Station 1190 WVNJ in Teaneck, NJ, and I traveled and sang with Bishop Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir.
I’ve served as an adjunct faculty member for the City University of New York at York College where I taught Cultural Diversity and Multiculturalism. I also served as an Instructor at New York Theological Seminary where I taught Biblical Exegesis and Introduction to the New Testament in the certificate program, and I’ve taught New Testament Studies and The Politics of Jesus at the Masters Level as a Preceptor.
My education includes an undergraduate degree in Speech Communications with an emphasis in Journalism from Pace University and a Master of Divinity degree from New York Theological Seminary. I am currently enrolled as a doctoral student at Boston University School of Theology and am excited to have been recently chosen to be a 2015-2016 Faith & Justice Fellow with the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies and New York Theological Seminary.m
The Blessing of “Firsts”
God has blessed me with many “firsts”! In 2011, I was the first female to address the Ministers Division of the Empire Baptist Missionary Convention and was later appointed as the first female on the Pastors Division of the state convention. I was also invited by the President of the state convention to serve as the first State Coordinator of the Women in Ministry Division. Also, my position as Senior Pastor at the St. Matthew’s Baptist Church of Harlem is the first time a female has served in the capacity in the church’s 90 year history.
I am a contributing writer for the National Baptist Convention’s Sunday School Publishing Board as well as the African American Lectionary and I have recently written an easy-to-read brief, entitled SCANDAL: An Introductory Brief on the Gospel of Jesus the Christ in Ancient Palestine. My work has also appeared in the best-selling book, These Sisters Can Say It: Volume 2. My sermons and work can soon be found on ROHO.
In 2012, I was appointed by the Borough President to Manhattan’s Community Board 10 where I served on the education and the housing committees serving central Harlem. An active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the NAACP and the National Association for the Advancement of Children with Learning Differences, I am committed to community transformation.
My son, Jordan, is a full-time college student who works part-time. When school is not in session, he resides with me in the home left by my parents who grew up in the segregated South and moved to New York City for a better life. Jordan and I both realize that ADHD is our strength, not our weakness, and we help others realize the same!
My passion is humanity! Helping humanity! Empowering humanity! I have embraced my God-given mission of teaching and preaching personal and community empowerment through Jesus Christ, who transcends the socio-economic limitations of this world. It can be a journey filled with bumps! But the bumps are what we climb upon! Let’s journey together…together we can change the world! It begins…right… now!
